The Importance of Initial Diagnosis and Treatment of Kidney Disease

When kidney disease occurs it is very important to obtain an early diagnosis and put yourself in the care of a specialist: the Nephrologist.
The sooner you receive your diagnosis and start treatment, the sooner diet and drugs can be used to fight the effects of the disease.
In the first stage of the disease, a simple change to your diet can help you to feel better. A Dietician will draw up the best possible diet for you. Your Nephrologist may also prescribe drugs to control hypertension and to compensate for the reduction in red blood cell production.
When your kidneys are no longer able to maintain their functions, in spite of diet and drugs you will need a new type of medical treatment to keep you in good health.
This treatment includes dialysis, either haemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. It may also be possible to register you on the transplant waiting lists (if your health and age render this appropriate).
