Treatment Choice

Whilst respecting the limits imposed by local authorities and regulations, Fresenius Medical Care centres actively support the concept of each patient being allowed to choose the treatment therapy that suits them best, be it at the dialysis centre or at home.
In-centre treatment is the most common, but our network also offers a number of limited care centres, or self-dialysis centres.
Fresenius Medical Care also has an innovative Home Therapy programme where patients can choose between home haemodialysis and the well-known and established peritoneal dialysis programme.
In all cases, the patient is told about all possible treatment options through a programme of informed consent. The choice of treatments for renal failure are dialysis or kidney transplant.
Dialysis is needed to expel the excess fluids together with the toxins which have built up in the blood.
A successful kidney transplant can help you to regain good health. But you should also remember that transplant too, is a treatment and not a cure.
There are two types of dialysis: Haemodialysis (HD) and Peritoneal Dialysis (PD). Dialysis does some of the things a normal kidney does, such as: removing extra water from the body and removing the waste products that have built up in the blood. Hemodialysis is usually done in a dialysis centre and nurses carry out your dialysis treatment, however there are some patients who carry out haemodialysis at home. Peritoneal Dialysis is always done as a home therapy.
