A change in perspective: from patient to nurse

For a handful of people, kidney disease, dialysis and talk of a transplant shape everyday life from a young age. One such man, José Luis Herrero of Valencia, Spain, was so inspired by his father’s ability to help people as a physician that he pursued nursing as a profession.

Born with a genetic condition affecting the kidneys, José Luis Herrero started on dialysis at a young age and went on to have two kidney transplants. During his time as a patient, he realised he wanted to devote his life to helping others feel better. After finishing his nursing studies in 2012, he began a master programme in Dialysis and Renal Transplants while also working as a substitute nurse at the Valencia NephroCare Dialysis Centre. Each day he is grateful to give back to people who share a similar fate.
